CATALINA ISLANDS

Buceo en Costa Rica

Located off Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast near Flamingo, the Catalina Islands are a stunning volcanic rock archipelago that offers some of the most diverse and exciting scuba diving experiences in the region.

Situated just 7 miles offshore, these islands are surrounded by nutrient-rich waters, thanks to dynamic ocean currents. This creates a thriving marine ecosystem, making the Catalinas a must-visit for underwater enthusiasts seeking unique marine life encounters.

The Catalina Islands diving spots are renowned among the top three dive destinations in Costa Rica. Divers can expect to see fascinating marine life, including white-tip reef sharks, hawksbill and green sea turtles, and various species of rays such as eagle rays, mobula rays, and the iconic oceanic manta ray.

Manta rays are one of the most sought-after highlights of diving in this area. While sightings can occur year-round, these graceful giants are most commonly seen between December and June, creating unforgettable moments for divers.

Another incredible feature of the Catalina Islands is their seasonal visits from humpback whales. These majestic creatures migrate to Costa Rica’s warm waters twice a year to give birth. Northern hemisphere whales arrive from January to April, while southern hemisphere whales can be spotted from August to November.
